Last week I wrote that in the coming weeks I’d provide you with information and practices that will make a huge difference in your life. You ready?

First thing to know is this – no matter who you are, where you’ve been, or what your story is, what you think about is the only factor that creates the quality of your life.

Since we cannot control our thoughts directly, this is a major point to consider.

On the other hand, if you believe you can control the thinking that goes on in your head, try this simple experiment:

Stop thinking.

If you can make it for ten seconds without a thought jumping into your cranium – either you’ve had a major head injury or you’ve got a major talent, and maybe you don’t even know which one it is.

But if you’re like the rest of us, you’ve already had plenty of experience to demonstrate that you are not in direct control of the frequency or content of your thoughts. This is because human consciousness is completely immersed in a force which constantly “delivers” thoughts and ideas into us.

The fact is – this phenomenon is beyond our control.

Neuroscientists tell us that our thoughts bombard us at a steady rate of about 1500 words and images per minute. That’s a whale of a lot of uncontrolled energy animating your world.

Wrap your head around this – you are the receiver, not the generator of your thoughts. There is a force we’ll call the “Universal Creative Mind” which moves thoughts to and through you at an astonishing rate whether you understand it or not.

Here’s an example to help illustrate. We humans don’t really “invent” things, we only discover what already exists and then foster new and different ways to use what we’ve found. The process is always subject to natural laws that already exist and completely govern our environment.

So it is with our thoughts.

Law Number One: There is a “Creative Mind” that imparts into you a superabundance of information 24 hours a day.

Here’s the silver corollary to that golden rule:

Each of us decides which thoughts to believe and which ones to let pass by. This is the aspect of thinking that we absolutely do control, and it’s a tremendously powerful revelation.

The great news is – what we do control makes all the difference to the quality of our lives. We select which thoughts to accept and work with, and which to ignore.

This is incredibly important to understand because, like it or not, you are embarked on a path of powerful and ongoing discovery and you are constantly creating your future experiences. The goal is to accept the thoughts that take you in the direction of what you want and let go of those that no longer serve you. Do you have the skills you need to do so?

Without these skills you’re like a ship with a broken rudder being tossed around on an angry sea. At some point you’ll be led by your emotions wherever the forces that lie beyond your control will blow you.

Some have asked if this realization entails a tacit denial of the facts… is this an abdication of  responsibility? If I ignore certain thoughts, aren’t I just sticking my head in the sand?

Not in the least. This is a conscious choice, not a denial, and we make this choice with the intent to increase our own personal power and improve the quality of our lives.

It all begins with the awareness of Law One.

If you have questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you.
